Based on the “Karabakh is Azerbaijan – 2!” competition announced by the Azerbaijan Science Foundation, the project “Monitoring of the Kahriz in the liberated territories” was launched and within the framework of the grant project "Development of the scientific foundations of the restoration of the soil", the Director General of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Corresponding Member of ANAS, Professor Alovsat Guliyev paid a scientific visit to the Republic of Uzbekistan.
During the visit, Professor Alovsat Guliyev met with Professor Bahodir Mirzaev, Rector of the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation Engineering and Agricultural Mechanization, operating under the Ministry of Water Resources of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and Professor Abdulvahid Urazgeldiyev, Director of the Scientific Research Institute of Irrigation and Water Problems.
The meetings discussed cooperation in the areas of water resource management, restoration of aquifer systems, and research into alternative water sources.
The Azerbaijani scientist provided detailed information about the large-scale restoration and reconstruction work carried out in Karabakh under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev. He noted that, the projects implemented to restore land reclamation and irrigation systems in the liberated territories demonstrate the significant achievements of our country in this area.
During the scientific trip, they visited irrigation canals in several regions. They also compared the efficiency of irrigation systems between Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. The analysis revealed that, problems such as depletion of water resources, soil degradation, and soil salinization under the influence of climate change remain relevant for both countries.
During the meetings, a memorandum of cooperation was signed between the parties, and a number of scientific discussions were held. As a result of the discussions, it was determined that, little systematic research has been conducted in Uzbekistan in the direction of studying the Kahriz. For this reason, it was decided to establish the "Kahriz Research-Search Group" for the first time in the country.
As a result of the visit, new areas of cooperation in the field of Kahriz research were formed between Azerbaijani and Uzbek scientists. In the near future, it is planned to conduct a joint scientific study of existing Kahriz in several regions of Uzbekistan, and to apply the results obtained in regional projects on water resources management and assessment of alternative water sources.
